A dream is just a dream until you make it happen..
As a child I always dreamed of visiting Lapland, and through adulthood with children of my own I understood why I had never been...it was very expensive.
I've spent countless hours over the years pricing it up on package holiday websites only to be given quotes of thousands of pounds; heart sinks and the [x] gets clicked immediately.
Until I stumbled across the BEST worst kept secret ever - The trick is to DIY it and plan carefully!
Across this website/blog I am going to share my own personal experience with booking a diy Lapland trip. A dream that I never imagined would be achievable, a dream I have since been able to achieve twice! I am not into gate keeping so I want to share every inch of information I have with you all, so that you too can make amazing Lapland memories.
This page is dedicated to going to Lapland on a budget, the cheapest way possible. This means that I wont have recommendations or advice on glass igloos or luxury resorts. This is cheap and cheerful but still enjoyable; its definitely not 1 star accomdation or anything like that, its just not high end luxury.
The thought of putting together a holiday yourself can feel pretty overwhelming but hopefully the information I share with you will help you to get started or at least give you the confidence to just go for it.
You can spend a day in Lapland or a week and it will be a truly magical experience.
I never thought it would be possible to visit Lapland for less than the thousands of pounds that i've always been quoted but it is possible for much less. The prices you see listed throughout this website/blog are based on a family of 4. If you are a family of 3 or 2 then the cost will be even less. Equally if you are a group of 7 I can give you a seperate breakdown of our costs as we often travel in a group of 7.
Our first trip was spent mostly in Akaslompolo, we stayed for 5 nights and then 1 night in Rovaniemi. The second trip was 2 nights in Rovaniemi.
Lapland is a huge area and the first thing is to research and choose which part of Lapland you would like to visit. We will be focusing on Finnish Lapland and specifically Rovaniemi and Akaslompolo because that is where we have visited. Other popular areas include but are not limited to
- Levi
- Saariselka
- Phya
- Yllas (Village next to Akaslompolo)
You can make your Lapland dream come true with self belief, confidence and careful planning. Get yourself comfortable because I did try to keep it short but its pretty impossible to keep it short. If you have any questions along the way feel free to send a message on Instagram :)
